Hot Flashes & Your Hair: What's Really Going On (& How to Cope)

You know the feeling before it really arrives. A little warmth bubbling up your chest, then your neck, and suddenly your hair feels like a wool scarf you'd give anything to take off. If you've been there, you're in very good company — and no, you're not imagining that! Your hair has been acting differently, too.

Let's talk about it, stylist to friend.

What a hot flash is actually doing

During perimenopause and menopause, shifting estrogen levels affect the part of your brain that acts as your internal thermostat. It becomes more sensitive, and small changes in temperature (like using a blow dryer!) can trigger that sudden rush of heat and sweating we call a hot flash (or a Power Surge, if you asked me!). For a lot of women, that includes the scalp — one of the sweatiest, most overlooked spots on the body.

All that extra heat and moisture at the roots does a few things to your hair. It can leave your scalp oilier by midday, flatten a style you worked hard on, and lead to product and sweat buildup that makes hair look dull and feel heavy. Add the hormonal dryness that tends to show up along the mid-lengths and ends, and you've got hair that's oily up top and thirsty at the bottom. Frustrating? Absolutely. Fixable? Also yes.

Small changes that make a real difference

You don't need to overhaul everything. A few smart swaps go a long way:

Lighten your products. Heavy creams and oils near the scalp trap heat. Switch to lightweight, breathable formulas and keep the richer stuff for your ends only.

Befriend dry shampoo. A quick refresh at the roots absorbs sweat and buys you an extra day between washes — a midlife essential, not a shortcut.

Clarify weekly. Sweat and product build up faster now. A gentle clarifying wash once a week resets your scalp and brings your shine back.

Sleep on silk or satin. Cooler against the skin, gentler on your hair, and a small luxury that helps with night sweats, too. Personally, I love my Chillow with my satin pillowcase! And I change the pillowcase frequently, sometimes daily because these nightsweats are no joke!

Hydrate the ends, not the roots. A weekly mask focused from the mid-lengths down keeps hair soft without weighing down your scalp.

You don't have to figure this out alone

Here's the part I want you to hear: the hair changes that come with this season aren't a personal failing, and they're not permanent problems you're stuck with. Your hair simply has new needs now, and there's a whole strategy for meeting them. Just like we had to learn how to deal with raging hormones during puberty, now we have to re-learn how to deal with every aspect of our body that's operating without hormones.

That's exactly what our Reset service was built for — a cut, a color plan, and a scalp-care-routine reset designed for the hair you have today, not the hair you had at 25. If hot flashes have you feeling at war with your own head, come sit in my chair. We'll cool things down together.
